Before Healing Start with Accountability

"Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy." Proverbs 28:13

Before healing, before closure, before growth, there is a moment when we have to be honest about our own part.

Not the polished version. Not the explanation that leaves out what we said, what we did, or what we chose not to do. Just the truth.

Proverbs 28:13 connects acknowledging our own wrongdoing and turning from it with receiving mercy. That is not the same as taking blame for someone else’s choices. Accountability asks me to face what belongs to me. It does not ask me to carry what doesn’t.That distinction matters. Sometimes we use the whole story to explain away our part in it. Sometimes we use spiritual language to sound

like we’ve taken responsibility without actually naming what we did. But healing can’t grow around a truth we keep avoiding.Facing my part doesn’t mean condemning myself or pretending the other person did nothing wrong. It means I stop making excuses for the choices that were mine. Then I can ask God for the humility to change, to make amends where I can, and to move differently.

That’s where growth begins for me: not with looking like I’ve changed, but with being willing to tell the truth about where I still need to.

Prayer
God, help me be honest about my own choices. Keep me from excusing what I need to face, and from carrying blame that isn’t mine. Show me what I can make right and how to move forward with humility. Amen.
